Environmentally friendly???

To all those people who have argued nuclear energy is a good option...
Have a look at this.
I'm totally not convinced. (Actually I am convinced.  It's not a good option!)

Nuclear reactors, (pulp mills too) I'm with you there. I think they are the devil's work and we should never have any more here at all. If people put their minds to it we could have electricity from water, wind, wave power and the Sun and probably other things too. Those poor people. I could never live close to a nuclear reactor. That way madness lies....

It's insane isn't it. The first thought I had was, "why would you have Nuclear power in an earthquake zone?!??" Especially 40 year old plants.

I'm steadfastly against nuclear power but not so much because of the danger of meltdown/radiation as I believe that modern plants are fairly safe. BUT there is NO solution as to what to do with the waste and the uranium that we are digging up and transporting through WA is a disaster waiting to happen. Maralinga has got nothing on the radiation poisoning that is going to result from the transportation of the stuff to sell to OS nuclear reactors and that's going on right under our noses because of Barnett's lifting of our mining ban...

PS. Trust Murdoch press to be disingenuous with their headline! "Thousands feared dead after blast at Fukushima No. 1 plant in Japan". It's not the reactor that's killed thousands (yet anyway), it's the earthquake and resulting tsunami (MURDOCH, you are the devil).

I feel so sorry for all the poor people of Japan. I hope they get the reactors under control so that they don't have another disaster to contend with.

PPS. We make monthly donations to http://www.shelterboxaustralia.com.au/
Sometimes it's hard to know what you can do in the face of such enormous pain and suffering. This one feels right to us.

Yes I realised the headiline was a bit dodgie but I really just wanted the photo but when I tried to add it it was copywrited or something and I just ended up linking the whole kit and kaboodle. I totally agree about the waste issue and I think it is morrally wrong to leave our childrens children's children or however long it takes with the mess and consiquences of our greed and inaction now especially when there are much cleaner and much less toxic alternatives to explore. But the modern plants still worry me- I wouldn't like one down the road from me mostly due to the unexpected things that can happen, even though they might be few and far between- if there is a problem it could be a big one and the radiation can have such long lasting effects on the people exposed and the land around it.

Totally agree! If there's a leak it is BAD...not something that you can get over like a slight cold. I also wouldn't want one down the road. I think it's madness to even consider it and since Australians are for the most part totally against nuclear power (there was an uproar when Howard tried to champion it), this horror in Japan isn't going to help the pro case any at all! I don't think we should be mining the stuff either though. I also think that coal should be illegal...but we're greedy as you say and the mining money would be impossible for some to give up. And I think we should find a loophole to get out of the gas project with China too. China has boodles of gas themselves and they are buying up all stockpiles around the world so that they have a monopoly. That's not a conspiracy theory, it's actually true. We've gleefully sold off our asset for short term bags of cash and have reserved nothing for our future. WE ARE IDIOTS.

And in a country with so much room and sun and wind we are mad not to have solar farms all over the desert and wind farms all over the coast (I actually think that wind turbines are elegantly beautiful - something I've had an argument with the Historian's mum over)

Rant ends....

I like that we are friends your rants do not seem like rants but pure common sense! When I post this I was actually reflecting on a lunchtime conversation in the staffroom where I was previously where I was in the minority in my thoughts against neuclear power etc. I agree that the wind turbines are quite beautiful particularly in comparison to the coal and neuclear power stations, they are hardly aesthetically pleasing nor the large holes left in the ground afterwards.
I did not know that about china actually- how stupid are we?

Red Hen (dette) said...

well I did know that about china but not the extent to which it was happening!
