Finding a theme... and time.

Boy I've been a bad blogger. I've been pretty busy but just everyday stuff, kids and work- my computer time has been taken up with creating work packages for an Online Teaching and Learning System that I've been learning about but haven't used enough to be very proficient at yet. And crochet.

Mollie Flowers tutorial from Roman Sock

But yesterday I did something a bit different. Months ago I enrolled in a workshop at the Art Gallery of WA run by David Walker. There is an exhibition of his jewellery on at the gallery at the moment. I woke up feeling a bit tired and not really in the mood for it but having paid I went. It was quite interesting and I came away with a couple of bits of important information.
At one stage he was taking us through his exhibition and telling us where his ideas had come from. Now I know you will all probably shake your heads at the obviousness of these revelations but I guess it was just something I needed to hear at this point.

1. Make something that you like...yes it is important that it is something that others might like especially if you want to sell it but make things that you like.

2. Focus on things you are interested in or passionate about- emotionally or intellectually.

The aim of the workshop was more about exploring ideas than creating a piece of jewelery.
Unfortunately one other girl and myself did not get the preliminary workshop notes so we were well and truly behind all the others who came with materials, tools, notes and stimulus pictures as well as some idea of the materials they wanted to explore.
I made a start wrapping yarn around a curly vine. playing with the contrasting textures of the wood and the different types of yarn. I felt a bit embarrassed when David came to talk about "My ideas" and "theme and direction" and I weakly replied "oh, I'm just playing with the textures at the moment....nothing deep and meaningful"
Than I tried melting plastic together with an iron, surprisingly easy and quite effective- something I might do with the kids at school (Sorry no photo, I've lost the piece I made.)

Then I started to think about weaving yarn and came up with these ideas.
(Remember they are an exercise in idea development not finished pieces)

As I worked I thought about my interests, I love fibers and traditional methods of working with textiles things that are predominantly or generally thought of as woman's crafts. I feel passionate about my children and my role as a mother. In my head I played with ideas of how we weave the threads of our lives together, we weave stories and treads of memory and how we bind those memories close - especially now that the kids are growing up I feel a bit sentimental about those memories and those traditional crafts have a link with the women of the past- my own direct past with my grandmother who knitted vests for us and our children and my great grandmother who crocheted, knitted and embroidered but also with the generations of women who sewed their hopes into things they made in the home and wove their memories into quilts, and other things they made for their families. These things in turn become the fabric of the life of the family and serve to provoke memories in the future for the children and grand children.

So I guess these little pieces are about that taking a traditional craft and presenting it in a more contemporary way. I actually enjoyed the different textures but these could be woven in different types of wire.

I also felt better when David found these experiments interesting and wished me well in my jewelery making pursuits.

And this afternoon I finished my crochet (It will be a cushion cover for a round cushion I have hiding somewhere or a trivet for hot pots. I'm not sure which just yet.)
And I managed to post this!

Primavera

This has taken pretty much all weekend to do. Well the spare moments over the weekend at any rate. I really want a red one but I'd run out of red cotton. I'll do that next!

I had another shot of this worn long (this one is double wrapped.) but when I uploaded it I wasn't happy with the top I was wearning under it so I'll try agian later...
I'm off to see a movie on my own now. I want to see the Duchess. I like these type of movies because of the costuming. Not many of my friends share my interest in this regard!

four more flowers...

. . .

I'm really enjoing making these floral necklaces for the market, they've kind of taken over. They are great because there's not alot of room taken up or mess to make. Just a few balls of cotton and a crochet hook and perhaps a few buttons or beads.

After saying that I wasn't going to spend too much time reading blogs I found myself joining in Blogtoberfest in which you blog every day, as I'd already been blogging every day (and three times on one day.) I'd thought I'd join in. As I've been quite productive at the same time I don't feel guilty about "wasting" my time. I find that it is quite motivating to see what other people are doing. Plus now I have my laptop on the go with the wireless network it's easier to find a minute or two to make a post while watching a bit of t.v. or baking cake or cooking dinner. It also doesn't take as long now that I'm becoming more computer literate!

How do your flowers grow..

I made this one this afternoon.
(Chicky Babe as model, and a lovely model too!)

A came to visit with her too little ones. They are just too cute! Lively and funny. We had a good long chat and spent some time sitting in the sunshine while the kids played. (Poor old Pablo had to have a little lie down after they left. He had makeshift alfoil balls to chase and was covered in vinigar and water spray -my next remedy for aphids.)

I baked this cake and it's yummy.

Almond, Coffee Crumble Cake
(An adaptation of one by Gordon Ramsay)

Crumble topping
Rub together 40g butter with 60g of plain flour and 40g brown sugar. Mix in about half a cup of flaked almonds (omitted from the one in this photo as I had none in the pantry. But they do add a yummy crunch.)

Cake.
set aside and alow to cool one third of a cup of good strong expresso.
Cream together 170g butter and 170g raw caster sugar. Beat in 3 eggs one at a time. Mix in a tspn of good quality vanilla extract or paste.

Mix in half of the coffee with a large metal spoon. Mix in 100g of almond meal.

Sift together half a tspn of baking powder with 100g of SR flour and then fold it into the mixture.

Fold through the remaining coffee.

Spoon into a lined, greased spring form tin, sprinkle crumble mixture on top.
Bake for about 50-60mins at 170degrees celsius (150 if you have a fan forced oven)
Sprinkle with icing sugar to serve. (Nice warm or cold)

Recycle, Reuse, Revamp.

I finished my bag last night and took it out and about today. I am very happy with it!

Last lazy holiday projects.

I finished my black dress.
However the fabric has sequins sewn into the embroidered sections and they scratch my arms when I move. Not a dress for all day wear, which is a shame because I thought I would wear it for work.

I've been watching Dr Who DVD's with the kids. Don't ask me how many we have watched! But it has been lovely spending a couple of days this holiday slothing around chatting with them. While I've been watching the T.V I've kept my hands busy with my crocheted flowers.

I had intended to use them on a floral panel on a handbag, but as I'm working I thought that I might use them on some purple felt as cushion covers.

I'm playing with different ways of constructing flower forms. I started to repeat a design with 6 petals thinking that I could join them and make a rug. (I'd need a lot more David Tennant episodes for that!) Unfortunately my crochet is so 'free form' they don't seem to tesselate.

The photo below was taken with the flash on, I don't like the way it washes everything out. I am playing with the settings on the camera and have discovered how to stop the flash and change some of the settings for different conditions. Another medium to explore in my spare time!

Finally having all the unfinished flowers everywhere was too much for me so I made a headband with some of them last night.

It's hard to take photos of things on your head on your own! Maybe I should have used the flash here because you cant see the edging- that took me the length of a movie to work, frog and rework, frog and rework until it was acceptable. (The problem that comes from not using a pattern)

As I worked this I wondered what it would be like to make some of the sections in silver wire- I've knitted bracelets before, thoughts of earrings started to play in my head using sections of the flower forms....

and chokers or bracelets...

but I really MUST tidy my room today. It was the one holiday project that I should have done but all the wants and whimsy got in the way. Housework will always be there tomorrow sometimes the creative urge is not.
