six cubic metres of letting go and the chair that made me weep.

This is the chair that made me weep. I began last Thursday when a friend of mine finally called me back and we agreed to meet on the weekend for coffee and a catch up after more than a year. This sent me into an instant state of dread. Oh my god my car port is a mess what if she drives down the driveway and sees all the stuff there the not so secret shame of my inner turmoil made visible. I had my computer open and I googled big skip bins and ordered one for the next day. So early Saturday morning I got everyone in the house out of bed and we attacked the car port, the patio and the front verandah. Gathering up broken bits of furniture, great finds (courtesy of Tim) that turned out to be not so great- one day he bought home a windshield he found on the side of the road!!!! (No it didn't fit anyones car. No I don't know why.) Oh there was also the bin full of rubbish- Tim forgot to put the bin out for our collection day. We were motoring along when I came to this pink chair. It had belonged to my great grandmother. I was given it when I moved into my first home when I was pregnant with Bantam Boy. It sat in the nursery that I had spent hours sewing curtains and cot sheets and making mobiles. I can see it sitting beside the window. I fed my first little baby in that chair by the window. It followed me to Kalgoorlie where I rocked Bantam Boy to sleep while I was pregnant with Chicky Babe. It was one of a couple of things I fought for when I left and took nothing with me but the kids and a few bags of clothing and was not allowed to take when the stuff was shipped back. It was one of three bits of furniture that I had in my first home I had with my children when I first became the 'little red hen' doing it on my own.
But the poor old chair has seen some hard times. When Bantam Boy was only about 4 Nana (my Nana) came to visit and he threw himself at he in a vigorous show of affection. A cuddle that was more like some kind of rugby tackle! Luckily this old chair broke her fall but in the process of saving her from any serious injury the chair's leg was broken, it was patched and mended but not properly and a few years ago it collapsed well rather took on a very serious lean, I put it out on the front verandah, moved it to the patio thought about throwing it away or the possibility of mending it properly and wondered if it would be too expensive for an old chair that is not particularly special.
So when I got to this chair in the big clear out this weekend, I faltered, I rang my mum.
"Just chuck it!" she said.
Ok I thought I can throw it away but when I went to pick it up to take it out the front to the bin the tears came. Bantam Boy and Tim were a little perplexed. I tried to explain through my tears why I couldn't do it. They both laughed at me lovingly and gave me big hugs. BB has been proud of my attempts to let go of some of the things that I have been hanging on to and is supportive of my efforts to get things sorted. He finds it particularly interesting as he is doing psychology, I'm a great case study full of interesting quirks for him to observe and try to understand.
We have kept the chair and I'm going to find out how much it will cost to have it repaired properly.
This ENORMOUS box of chocolates was a present from Tim because he didn't like to see me cry.
Luckily I have lots of people to help me polish them off!

And this little fellow was sitting in a pot plant at a garage sale where I bought a truck load of the most beautiful pot plants for $50.
My holiday plans are all falling into place and sometimes I am so excited that I can hardly breathe!

satisfaction

This weekend I have devoted to organising my kitchen. Tim, bless him is an avid collector of lovely things and as a result the things I have to store in my shelves are growing in number and they had been put away all higgledy piggledy and as they are in plain view from the lounge this has been annoying me. So I've straightened them all up - I'm thinking of printing this picture for future reference so people can check to see where things go should they be unsure.
I went to Ikea yesterday - I wrongly assumed that it might be a little quieter because my walking friend said there was a football grand final on yesterday afternoon and I assumed that there might have been a lot of people there instead of at the shops- Boy was I wrong! There were people everywhere, I felt like a salmon going against the tide of people flowing along the designated viewing pathways. I was struck by how rude people are though. People run into you and just look at you in disgust or worse look through you when you smile and say sorry despite the fact that they had actually run into you!!!! Anyhoo...I went to Ikea to get some pull out wire baskets for my pantry. I realised that I've been in this house for 5 years and when I put the kitchen in I couldn't afford to buy all the baskets right at that time so I thought I'd put it off for a few weeks until I had the money to get some more. So about 250 weeks later I've bought some.
I popped in to visit Anki on the way home- they are making great progress on their home and I feel a little shamed that I still haven't finished my place and I've had 5 years!!!! I'm getting to the stage where things need redoing and updating and I'm not finished yet! I've got some new plans for my garden which I didn't plan so well in the beginning- I followed someone elses ideas and ended up creating a heat trap in my front yard- nice on a fine winters day but unbearable in summer!
When I got home I organised my pantry and my fridge! Everything is sorted according to type or use.

I'm seriously considering making labels for each shelf to ensure that the system can be followed by all of us!

The fridge now has trays for jams and spreads, sauces and chutney etc, cheese and dairy, dried fruit and nuts etc. I was alarmed to find several jars of the same type of thing all opened and hiding behind other things. It has been bothering me how wasteful my lack of organisation is. I found 5 jars of my favourite Thai yellow curry paste ( it is preservative free and tastes pretty authentic although it is cheating I know!
Maybe I'll make labels for these too!
I feel pretty satisfied with my efforts...I should have taken before shots but honestly I was too embarrassed!
Now what's next? The lounge room? the book shelf? my bedroom?

Print AND pictures!

Just a few pictures. I now have batteries AND the camera cord!
A new top made some weeks ago.
Mid room swap. Chicky Babe's very clean room (Much of the stuff is still around the rest of the house almost 4 weeks later!!!!)

The clutter lead to a small flurry of sorting and cleaning starting here.
The linen cupboard sorted...
here's some of what came out of it and packed off to the good sammies.
Ever hopeful I have labeled the drawers in the kitchen in an effort to make it easier for others to put things back in the right place.
Do you remember the computer cords labeled, bagged and boxed.
Well this is what they look like again! ***Sigh***
This is under foot...
And this is beside me... Bantam Boy need not worry- there is no way I am confusing him as a house husband at the moment. He was concerned that I would as he is neither studding or working yet he believes he should not be expected to do anything extra at present...yes we have had some words! :-(

I have managed to ignore some of the mess to feed my need to do something a bit creative. I'm trying to get the kids at school interested in art from different times and places and to become familiar with some well known artists as a part of the arts in society section of the visual arts. So as I love the work of Frida Kahlo so I decided to put one of her works on a t-shirt using a computer iron on transfer then add some embroidery to it and then wear it to school.

I love the way it turned out! It's now my favourite shirt. I'll have to buy some more plain black shirts and do some more.

Sorting

I've spent the last couple of days I've spent sorting through a mountain of stuff. The children hadn't followed my cord sorting system and the computer area was SOOOOOOO messy. So I grabbed a bunch of tubs and set to sorting through old papers and gathered things together in clusters of things that go together. This sounds very obvious to you I am sure but I have kind of let things get away from me of late and now I am left with a BIG mess.
Today's effort was the huge tub of pens pencils and office supplies that was the result of tossing things from all around the house into the one box! I was horrified to see how much there was! How bad this is in terms of the environment. How much consumerism!!!

The tub.....what a mix!

Mid sort....

Lead pencils...coloured pencils and textas...fine tip markers....red and blue pens....thick markers and whiteboard markers.....all other stuff.

I like this photo of the bundle of pencils. Some smooth some scuffed one covered in paint speckles...I wonder what projects they have seen?

I think the red pen is trying to escape!!!

AHHHHH....... all sorted! Much better!

Some very bad news...

My cleaning lady has quit! She has decided to study english so that she can get work in her field- personal assistant or something- she said she used to use her brain all the time but now here she has to use her hands because her english was not good enough to get the kind of work she used to do. She rang today to break the news. She was so very sorry but she does not have the time to clean any more.
I am pleased for her. But I am very sorry for myself! I was so excited when I found her and she is so very lovely. I will miss her. And I'm not looking forward to the bickering with the children about chores and who has done more work and therefore shouldn't be expected to do this or that, and who has more homework and therefore not enough time.... And anyway don't I want them to do well at school therefore they shouldn't have to do this or that.....
So I guess my search begins again!
